UM. AMERICANA

Technical determination for the reclassification of containers and management of cyanide drums.

What did we do?

We presented a characterization study on the waste called "cardboard containers used as explosive packaging" generated by the company ALPAYANA S.A. during the dispatch of explosives and blasting accessories inside the mine. The objective was to determine whether these boxes should be classified as hazardous or non-hazardous waste. Additionally, the management and reclassification of cyanide drums was carried out.

Characterization

Technical analysis of residual composition.

Management

Cyanide drum logistics.

Environmental engineer examining packaging materials in laboratory

Case Resolution

"The technical resolution concluded that the cardboard containers and drums do not present hazardous characteristics. MINAM determined that this waste can be managed as non-hazardous waste."

Important note: If the cardboard were to become contaminated with the explosive product, it should be managed as hazardous waste.

Success Summary

We achieved a favorable technical opinion that supports the reclassification, optimizing the waste chain.

Environmental Criterion

Adequate, safe and efficient management under current regulations.

Valid Methodology

Confirmation through rigorous documentary analysis and testing.

Accredited Testing

Laboratory results that guarantee non-hazardousness.

Questions that may arise

Why are these boxes not considered hazardous?
Because they were only used as external packaging and did not have direct contact with the explosive. The technical analysis validated that they do not retain intrinsic properties of the material they originally contained.
What test was key to the conclusion?
The accredited laboratory test was fundamental, as it confirmed through reactivity and toxicity tests that the waste was not explosive nor posed an immediate chemical risk.
What is done with these boxes in the end?
They are disposed and managed by a Solid Waste Operating Company (EO-RS) duly authorized by MINAM, ensuring a responsible and legal final life cycle.
